3. Explore Web-based applications and take Google Docs for a test drive. (20-30 mins.)

The availability and use of Web-based applications (think word processing and spreadsheets) has exploded over the past two years and for good reasons! These powerful applications provide users with the ability to create, share, and save documents over the Internet without the need of installed desktop software.

Web-based applications allow users to:
  • easily share a document with other users for group collaboration and editing.
  • create documents without worrying about compatible software versions or file types.
  • save and convert documents as multiple file types (including Word, PDF and HTML).
For this discovery exercise, NetTrekkers are asked to take a look at Google Docs, a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and form application offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. These files can also be tagged and archived for organizational purposes.

After reviewing the Scribd document below, try creating a few Google Docs of your own! If you're up to the challenge, you might even export your document as an HTML file and then upload your text to your blog, but please note that this is not mandatory.

Check out this short article on viewing a Scribd document like the one above. PLEASE NOTE: A printed copy of every Scribd document can be found at each CPL, CCPL, and SoBoCo Public Service desk as well as at the CPL Circulation staff computer. These documents are located in a folder labeled "Blog Documents and Instructions." This is to encourage the sharing of documents and prevent wasted paper. Show your love to Mama E (a.k.a Mother Earth).
